It's impossible to mark the date when I fell in love with this breed. Some time marks can be found, though - a 6-7/1983 number of Koiramme-lehti with an article about Gerogeest Alkestis in it. After twenty years of dreaming I finally got my first newfoudland from kennel Papa Hacedor's in 2002. This remarkable lady was "Iines" (Papa Hacedor´s Inner Smile), who tought us how to behave when newfies are around. In 2004 another little black monster, "Tiltu" (Terhotarhan Hunajapupu) joined our crew.

We live Finland in a city of Lohja, some 55 km west of our capital Helsinki. We have our own fenced yard,  but we mainly walk our dogs in forests, and there are also nice places to swim nearby. Our dogs are very much loved family members, although it means a lot of mud, loose hair and drool. Newfoundlands belong to the absolute elite of companion dogs, and should live with their people, in a middle of action.

We have a wide selection of hobbies with our newfoundlands, since they've proven themselves to be quite versatile. Our hobbies include water rescue, obedience training, dog shows and digging in the garden. We have also practiced rescue dog training (mostly training on ruins) and agility - Tiltu has even started in unofficial agility competitions. More info about our newfies in action can be found here, on hobbies page.

I've personally found clicker training to be the most effective way of training newfoundlands. It makes training logical, rewarding and most of all - FUN for both parties. Well, mainly because newfies now feel that they can boost treat-giving with their own activity and initiatives.

For quite a few years, our dogs' diets have been based mainly on raw food, practically on a BARF diet. This means raw bones, raw meat, eggs and raw vegetable/ fruit purée. Our adult dogs have been on a kibble diet in their earlier lives but raw diet seems to work even better. Ruu has been eating raw food all her life, even before her birth, so to say. We buy our groceries mainly from Kennelrehu. However, this is not a religion, but I strongly recommend trying it to everyone ;)

Our breeding happens in a very small scale. When it comes to breeding, my aim is to breed newfoundlands that have typical newfie temperaments, good basic health, willingness and ability to work and a breed-typical appearance. Ideal looks would include a healthy structure, sound movements, beautiful head and strong bones. The giant size of this breed sets some boundary conditions. Of course we can't control nature but we can try our very best.
